A Musical Journey
The musical instruments collected by Dr. Hüseyin Parkan Sanlıkol as part of his personal journey intersected with Nilüfer Municipality’s efforts toward protecting and transmitting cultural legacies which resulted in the idea of a museum as well as a dream come true.
Nilüfer Municipality Dr. Hüseyin Parkan Sanlıkol Musical Instruments Museum opened its doors on August 21, 2021, with a modern and innovative approach to exhibition. The museum presents the intercultural interactions of music and social traditions to the visitors by classifying over 300 instruments into 13 different geographical regions. The museum, which introduces the visitors to various instruments from around the world throughout an intercontinental journey, categorizes the instruments according to how they are spread over the world as opposed to countries or people. While the museum presents a musical geography composed of 13 islands, due to its multi-dimensional nature along with the variety of instruments present in the collection, a rightful exception is being made by placing Turkey in the center.
The variety of shades created by the reflections of lights help enrich the interaction with the instruments at the museum where all of the islands have also been designed as concert stages. The short explanations given for the culturally significant instruments present unique treasures of each region instead of the already-existing clichés and exotic impressions. By informing the visitors about the existing musical instruments and traditions in the world, the conceptual framework of the museum makes it possible to both provide an image of the rich cultural legacy of all humanity and enable a deeper relationship with music.
The principal function of the museum is reflected through a multi-functional, active and viewer experience focused internal flow of events such as temporary exhibits planned in relationship with different disciplines, recitals, and workshops.
Nilüfer Municipality Dr. Hüseyin Parkan Sanlıkol Musical Instruments Museum, which also acts as an intercultural platform, presents a new chapter in the field of museology in our city by way of its contemporary exhibition mentality, dynamic and pluralist environment.
Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol is the project manager of the museum where data infrastructure was created so that the visitors can interactively access audio samples of the instruments. Finally, since the curator/project director of the museum, Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol, is a professor at the New England Conservatory (NEC), 52 historical instruments with a history of 150 to 400 years were donated to the museum.
In the performance area, which is not separated from the exhibition area, concerts, exhibitions, talks, workshops, and educational activities will be held periodically to help the visitors embark on a unique journey within the embracive world of music.
The museum is open to visitors between 09.00 and 17.00 every day, except Mondays.
